Is Jumping J-Jays a Great Franchise Opportunity?

November 24, 2008 by Sean Kelly · Comments Off

According to the company website, Jumping J-Jays is a highly successful franchise concept in Australia and New Zealand which is now being  offered to entrepreneurs in the United States.  If true, that would be an exciting proposition, since most homegrown opportunities have limited availability by the time they are “proven” and “successful.”

According to the company website:

Jumping J-Jays became an award winning franchise system being named two years running as the Franchise Council of Australia’s Franchisor of the Year for the Home-based and Mobile category and more recently in 2007 as one of the 7th most proftable J-Jaysfranchise systems to buy as ranked by the financial review.

In 2007, John Newton launched the company’s first United States branch in frisco, Dallas in Texas. Since successfully building the business in Australia and then in New Zealand, the United States is the next frontier for Jumping J-Jays’ international expansion of this home based and mobile franchise moonwalk business.

more and more party castle or bounce house franchises are being opened every week somewhere in Australia, New Zealand or the United States by jumping j-jays. We are now responsible for over 50,000 jumping castle parties per annum. If you are just hiring a castle or want to buy a franchise, be sure to smile when the kids are having so much fun

However, “Jack,” an Australian who left this comment on a post mentioning Jumping J-Jays, tells a different story:

Jumping J-Jays is a failing Franchise in Australia with most of the Franchisees having already shut down due to a number of factors.
1 You work incredibly long hours ie 5 am to 1 am the following day on occasions for a very poor return.
2 No one makes any real money because Jumping J-Jays take over 40% of turnover and factor in things like Moon Walks having to be replaced at very high prices at Jumping J-Jays option and being unable to recover any money by selling them.
3 Jumping J-Jays will not tell you that you have to do an awful lot more marketing than they tell you before you sign and some of it could will be against the law. If you don’t do it you will lose your business illegal or not.
4 Jumping J-Jays style of management as has been experienced in Australia can be repugnant to say the least. Most people cite this as one of major reasons they closed the doors after factoring in that they were never likely to see a return on their money.
Beware, the majority of Franchisees would rate this business as the worst decision they have made in their lives setting them back to where they were as teenagers, over half of the Franchises have closed down over the last 18 months. Would you risk that?

Award-winning, successful import or flawed and failing export?  It can’t be both;  please share a comment below if you can help solve this mystery.

Note:  The text (misspellings and all) and opinions of both comments are that of the original authors.

When the going gets tough, the tough get innovative.

With the right combination of franchisor and franchisee, and franchise concept, franchising can provide the ultimate win-win relationship.

TopNewFranchises.com is searching for the best of the new and emerging franchise concepts to highlight and promote throughout 2009. Amazing Spaces Storage Centers

Amazing Spaces is out to reinvent the self-storage industry, and is looking for franchisees to help them do it.  Their innovative approach includes a fresh approach to branding and marketing, customer services, amenites and security for both individual and business customers.  They even have a “wine storage” facility developed by a team of wine consultants, temperature specialists, and security experts to meet the highest standard for wine preservation for collectors, restaurateurs and individuals?  Is Amazing Spaces and amazing franchise opportunity?  We’ll let you know.

Area Pro Realty

Area Pro Realty claims to be “the most innovative recession proof real estate company in the industry,”  providing the most efficient, high-tech broker management system available in the industry.  Area Pro Realty claims that its franchise provides real estate brokers with both a high-tech system, and an efficient, innovative business model that allows the agents and the brokers to focus on what they do best: sell real estate.  Is Area Pro Realty a Top New Franchise?  They sold two franchises right off the bat, and claim many more in the pipeline.  We look forward to learning more.

PLAY N TRADE: Franchisee Shares Secrets of Success; Blasts “Whiners”

November 21, 2008 by Sean Kelly · Comments Off

videoFRANCHISES200 Robert Meyers has had it with the Play N Trade detractors and franchisee “whiners” commenting on Franchise Pick and elsewhere.

He’s decided to set the record straight… and share the secrets of his success at building a profitable Play N Trade retail units used video game

Meyers is CEO of Gamers Guild Holdings Inc., the “largest franchise holder in the PNT family.”  In a comment left on a lively Franchise Pick post (IS PLAY N TRADE A GREAT FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY?),  Meyers defends the Play N Trade franchisor, acknowledging that they have made mistakes, but also that they are working hard to correct them.

One of those mistakes was franchisee selection.  Meyers says that “Play N Trade let people buy a franchise that had no business having a franchise,” and that many “went into the franchise underfunded.”

Meyers has stinging criticism for some of his fellow franchisees.  These franchisees, says Meyers, “whine and cry and expect Play N Trade to make it all better. Fact of the matter is that you are a self employed business owner. Stop your whining and ‘make’ your business work.”

Franchisee Meyers lists his key tips for building a successful used video game retail store:

As a business owner it is “your” responsibility to make “your” business profitable not corporate PNT. We run 60-70% margins because we are smart and make our business work. I will give you all a few tips on how to do this.

1) Advertise! Advertise to your correct demo first and foremost. Young new age rock stations are perfect. Sustain your marketing efforts.

Second, when you advertise give a call to action. When you first open advertise the fact you are a local business that wanted to invest in your community. Advertise 50% more on trades for a week when you open. This will stock your stores up and allow you to get butts in the door so they can see just how great you are.

Don’t do live radio remotes. They do not provide a good ROI (return on investment).

2) Even before you open your store get yourself a great commercial broker. Interview the hell out of them. Want to know how much we pay to open a store right now? 15,000 max. Why? The landlords are hurting terribly bad and need to fill their space. so we make them pay for almost everything plus give us 6-12 months free rent per location.

3) Don’t hammer on new merchandise. You don’t make money on new. You make money on used. Used comes from trades. Get the picture? Pre orders should be pushed by giving 20% more on trades when they pre-order.

4) market your niche. Trade in cell phones, more for trades, repair systems, disc repair, try before you buy, local business.

5) People People People! No one can get a job… you have the pick of the litter. Look for personality first, game experience second. People come to stores not to just buy games. You can do that all over the place. They will come to interact with the people they enjoy interacting with. Hire a dynamic personality and watch your customer base grow.

6) Hammer your memberships. Membership e-mail and cell phone databases give you free marketing directly to your base.

7) Sign walkers. We use them at every store at peak hours. We hire a sign walker for 20 hours a week at every store. It is well worth the 7.15 an hour you have to pay to get butts in your store. It is simply effective.

8) Signage! Negotiate for the big pylon space on the monument signs! You will get it. If they can’t see you they can’t shop you.

I would be happy to assist and advise any struggling franchisee in the system.
For the rest of you guys smearing play n trade… They are not perfect. The economy is terrible and I frankly don’t know any business that is doing well right now. My corporation is making money even in this environment and I am in Michigan, the worst ecoonomy in America. If we can do it anyone can. SO stop whining and take responsibility for your own failures and shortcomings and stop blaming other people.

COLD STONE CREAMERY: And That’s How Pepper Spray Swirl Became a Flavor…

November 21, 2008 by Sean Kelly · Comments Off

Will Cold Stone Creamery be adding Pepper Spray Swirl as a new flavor?  Or Tazerberry?  Will MACE be the newest mix-in?

Reader IllvilleMama jokingly suggested the Pepper Spray Swirl flavor in comments following the story of a fired Cold Stone Creamery employee so loyal that his hands had to be pried from the counter and he had to be pepper-sprayed by police to be removed from the premises.

According to The Daily Journal, the Aug. 9, 2005, incident happened at the Cold Stone Creamery in New Jersey’s Cumberland Mall.

According to court records, it started with Caldwell, an employee, engaging in a dispute with an assistant manager over her instructions. The original police report said foul language in front of customers was involved.

The assistant manager called the ice cream store’s owner, who told her to fire Caldwell. But Caldwell refused to leave, even when police arrived.

Officers used pepper spray to get Caldwell to let go of a counter he was using to resist being taken away.

The municipal court’s punishment amounted to $1,404 in fines and costs.

Caldwell argued on appeal there was not enough evidence to convict him, and he was denied his rights to an attorney, to confront witnesses and due process. He also claimed his right not to incriminate himself was violated.

The opinion from the two-judge appeals panel states the record “fully and firmly supports” the charges against Caldwell, calling his conduct “loud, boisterous and profane.”

“And despite defendant’s other blunderbuss contentions, we find no constitutional deprivation,” it states. “Indeed, we find defendant’s argument that he was deprived of the right to counsel to be particularly frivolous.”

The article states that Rahim Caldwell, 30, has just lost the third appeal of his conviction on three charges.  He represented himself in the last, and hopefully final, appeal.

Gun Violence Claims Life of Contours Express Franchisee

November 21, 2008 by Sean Kelly · Comments Off

Contours Express franchise owners are mourning the tragic death of Winnsboro, TX franchise owner Joy Glasgow.

Both Joy Glasgow and her daughter, Lauren Miller, moved to Winnsboro from Oregon, and opened a Contours Express women’s fitness franchise last year.  Both mother and daughter worked at the center, which had been growing in membership.

According to a KLTV report:

Just before 8:00 am Monday, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department made a welfare check at a home in the 3900 block of CR 4660. That’s when deputies found the body of 53 year old Joy Elizabeth Glasgow with a gunshot wound. KLTV 7’s Molly Reuter spoke with those that knew her today, and says the news of her death has quickly spread through the Winnsboro community.

About a year ago, Joy Glasgow opened a fitness center for women called Contours Express. This morning, a sign hung on the front door saying ‘closed till further notice’. Those that knew her told us that Glasgow’s daughter worked at the fitness center with her, and Glasgow often slept at the gym as well. Some of Glasgow’s clients drove by the fitness center this morning in disbelief over what happened.

“I couldn’t believe it you know I thought she was just a good lady, and I was really shocked,” said Renee Healy, who works out at the fitness center.

Police reportedly have a “person of interest,” who is in custody on outstanding warrants.

Our condolences go out to Ms. Miller, and to all of Joy Glasgow’s family and friends.

SUBWAY: Smacked by the Terrifying Pink Handbag of Wrath

November 19, 2008 by Sean Kelly · Comments Off

Some gay bloggers are celebrating the triumphant power of “pink wrath.”  It seems that gay activist and blogger Mike Rogers has brought Subway to its… nevermind.

What was the great human rights victory?  Gay activist and blogger Mike Rogers allegedly bullied Subway into making one of its franchisees withdraw a $2500 campaign contribution to an anti-gay marriage “Yes on 8″ campaign, and one assumes, resubmit it as a personal contribution.

A post on PageOneQ (written both by and about Rogers) states that Rogers’ complaints to the company spig250txtprompted franchisor Doctor’s Associates to send out a warning  letter to the franchisee, and to franchisees and developers worldwide:

“It has been brought to the attention of [Subway parent company] Doctor’s Associates Inc. that you have made a contribution to a politically oriented organization. It is our understanding that you intended this solely as a personal contribution and that you were not intending to make any representation on the part of the SUBWAY brand,” The company wrote in response to the gift made by a Merced, California location of the chain. The store is located inside the popular Merced Mall.

Explaining the company’s position the letter continued, “You should also be aware that your franchise agreement prohibits your use of the SUBWAY trademark as part of your business or corporate name. Further, it states that you agree to ‘…not use the Trademark in a manner that degrades, diminishes, or detracts from the goodwill of the business associated with the Trademark’ and ‘to promptly change the manner of such use if requested to do so by us.’”

So Mike Rogers prompted Subway to enforce its own current policy.  Woo-hoo!  Another major civil rights milestone.

Blogging about himself in the third person, it seems, Rogers writes:

On his original blog post, Rogers wrote, “We have a handle — a handle on a spigot of money. Mess with the gays and watch the ‘pink wrath’ slowly twist the spigot until they’re at the table begging for forgiveness.” At Subway the spigot is fully open.

So what’s the cause for celebration?

So, Mike Rogers, what’s the cause for celebration?

That you harrassed a franchisee into hiding his political views?

That you got one guy to reclassify his contribution as “personal”?

That you further convinced franchise companies to avoid social issues?

That you can use the same tactics as your political adversaries? (See  McDonald’s: Did McD’s Cave to Anti-Gay Group’s Boycott?)

That you prompted the corporation to warn thousands of Subway owners to keep their personal opinions – including pro-gay rights opinions – from being connected to their businesses?

Sadly, the Pink Wrathers (not to be confused with the Pink Truthers) have again missed an important point.  This means that they’ve dissuaded franchisees who agree with them from voicing their political views in connection with their businesses.

Too bad Mike didn’t go for a real victory – like getting other Subway franchisees to contribute 10 times that amount for his cause.

Of course, bullying is a lot less work.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?  SHOULD JOE THE PLUMBER STICK TO PLUMBING AND SUBWAY TO MAKING SANDWICHES?

CURVES FOR WOMEN: Successful Franchise Owner Renews for 10 More Years

November 15, 2008 by Sean Kelly · Comments Off

curves While most of the Curves for Women franchise news of late has been pretty depressing, the owner of the Lockport, N.Y. club is definitely seeing the water-bottle as half-full.

Curves franchise owner Sally Reid is celebrating the completion of her 10-year franchise agreement by moving into a higher profile location… and signing up for another 10 years.

For Reid it’s location, location, location. And parking, parking, parking.

According to a story by Joe Olenick in the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal, Reid first opened her Lockport Curves for Women franchise 10 years ago.  After outgrowing her first location, she moved her club into a local strip center, Lockport Plaza.  For the past two years, Reid has been eyeing a prominent corner location in downtown Lockport, but hesitated because of parking concerns.  When the building next door was razed to create a private parking lot, she seized the opportunity to relocate to the corner of Walnut and Washburn streets in Lockport.

“Said Reed:  ““It’s just phenomenal… I liked the fact this is such an up-and-coming area. It’s constant exposure because of the newness of everything that is here.”

“I felt comfortable with the owners and the integrity of the company”

Prior to opening her Curves for Women club, Reid ran the Fitness Palace fitness center for 15 years.  She initially chose Curves in part because she “felt comfortable with the owners and the integrity of the company”

She obviously feels the same way, as she has signed a 10 year franchise renewal and plans to continue to build her Curves for Women franchise.

Women who are thinking about joining the Lockport Curves should call 433-3398 to set up an appointment and a free visit.

CURVES FOR WOMEN: Paradise Lost as Hawaiian Curves Franchise Closes

November 15, 2008 by Sean Kelly · Comments Off

As the recent closing of the Kailu, HI Curves for Women fitness center shows, a failed franchise location is a loss for many involved.

In this case, franchise owner Robbi Ugini must deal with the personal and financial agony of defeat.  Her 5 employees are suddenly jobless.  Her 270 members are without a fitness club.  Her landlord has a vacant space, and her lender will, most likely, have a defaulted loan.  And the franchisor will not be receiving future royalties, revenue from purchases or advertising contributions.

What started as a dream ended in disappointment

According to the story by Nina Woo in the Honolulu Star Bulletin, Ugini opened her Curves franchise in 2005.  The initial location in the Enchanted Lake shopping center was doing well with 435 members.  Her lease was up just two years later, and Ugini relocated to another location last year, above Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop. The business struggled in the new location, with just 270 members.

Ugini tried selling her Curves for Women franchise for the fire sale price of $15,000, but could get no takers.  Part of what hampered the sale was the additional equipment investment the new owner would have to incur, per the franchisor’s requrements.  When a prospective buyer recently pulled out at the last minute, Ugini decided to close the doors and liquidate.  According to the article:

The closure was abrupt, leaving some 270 members in the lurch. Five staff members also lost their jobs.

“I made sure my staff was paid,” said Ugini. “I had the very best staff in the world.”

Ugini said she is working on notifying everyone of their options. She said members’ payments made on Oct. 5 have all been canceled.

Qualified members can request a travel card, she said, which allows them to use another Curves on Oahu for up to 20 days after they have been issued.

Some have gone to the Curves in Kaneohe, which is owned by a different franchise owner, but it won’t be able to take everyone.

“I am going to contact everyone,” she said. “It’s just going to take me a little more time to get to everybody.”

Some members paid on a monthly basis, some prepaid for three months and others for the entire year.

VR Business Broker calls Curves a fad and the franchisor uncaring

A business broker named Mark Heilbron, a business broker at VR Mergers & Acquisitions, had some harsh words both for the Curves franchisor and the Curves franchise fitness concept, which he categorized Curves as “a trendy kind of business.”   Heilbron said he sold a couple of Curves franchises in recent years, but has listed many that never sold (the glut of Curves resales on the market, some priced at $1.00, has been reported here.  See How to Open a Health Club for Half the Cost, and How to Buy a Curves Franchise for $1.00… or Less!).  According to the article:

“It’s a faddish type of business,” he said. “They made a lot of money and then when the trend went out, people who were still in them lost a lot of money.”

While buyers are more cautious in these economic times, Heilbron said they are still out there, with money they’d rather invest in a business than in the volatile stock market.

“Most people get talked into buying a franchise, and you’ve got to realize, depending on who the franchisor is, that most don’t care whether the franchisee makes it or not,” he said.

With the closure, Curves now has 17 locations on Oahu.  According to Curves International, the Texas-based chain has more than 7,000 locations in the U.S.

V’s Barbershop Franchise Experience: The Movie

November 13, 2008 by Sean Kelly · Comments Off

(FranchisePick.com)  You don’t have to be a barber (or a hair stylist) to own a V’s Barbershop franchise, as is evident in this franchise sales video.

The V’s Barbershop franchise is all about bringing back the old-time barber shop experience.  I’m not sure where they grew up, but the barber shop experience I remember didn’t involve pool tables and flat screen TVs.  I guess a decor package consisting mostly of wobbly wooden chairs and dog-eared, year-old Sports Afield magazines wouldn’t make for good video.

What do you think of the V’s Barbershop franchise?  Would it be successful in your town?
