I was interested in purchasing a Curves until I read some of the posts.
If Curves is such a bad deal, why has it been named “Franchisor of the Year for 2009?
Rogers7808:
There are no valid franchise awards/rankings that I know of (Though FranSurvey.Com at one time seemed to be useful and well-intentioned. I’m not sure of its status currently). All are somehow driven by a self-serving motive. For Entrepreneur magazine, the 800 lb. gorilla of franchise rankings, it is ad sales and perpetuation of the franchise myth of great opportunities galore.
The 2009 Franchisor of the Year award was [...]

Franchise Pick readers weigh in on the Eagle’s signing convicted dog-fighter Michael Vick.
In signing convicted dog fighter and animal abuser Michael Vick to a multimillion dollar deal, is the Philadelphia Eagles franchise showing compassion and forgiveness or immoral opportunism? Readers responded emotionally to our post PETA, Dog Lovers Tear Into Eagles, Vick.
Bob wrote:
Vick ran a death camp for dogs for five years, and now were are supposed to cheer for him? Would the Eagles put high ranking Nazi officers who participated in the Holocost on the team if it helped make money? I think yes. Earlier this year they had [...]

Is LIBERTY TAX SERVICE a great franchise opportunity dedicated to franchisee success or a “cult-like” organization out to “churn and burn their franchisees”?
That question arose recently on an UnhappyFranchisee.com post about the Liberty Tax Service franchise entitled Are LIBERTY TAX SERVICE Franchise Owners Happy?
UnhappyFranchisee.Com points out that In 2009, Entrepreneur magazine listed Liberty Tax Service as the #3 franchise, surpassed only by Subway at #1 and McDonald’s at #2. At the close of 2008, the number of U.S.-based Liberty Tax Service franchises reached nearly 2,500.
The Liberty Tax Services franchise website claims it’s recognition and growth is due to it’s superior [...]

From the post THE UPS STORE Franchisees: Drop-Offs Can Drop Dead

Before you fall in love with that exciting new franchise concept, it pays to familiarize yourself with franchise regulations and see whether your new squeeze is cheating on you.
For instance, the FTC prohibits promises of success or profits in franchise marketing materials. However, the Solera Distributors franchise website is filled with illegal earnings claims promising franchisee success & profitability. Solera Distributors claims:
…Franchisees should be able to support their basic living requirements for 4-6 months while building the foundation of their business. Franchisees will work in a defined territory. The potential of each territory will allow the franchisee the opportunity to [...]

CORRECTION: I picked up the story from NBC New York and Lunch’er Rich’s email on Midtown Lunch that a Mister Softee driver assaulted a Haagen Dazs street vendor. Turns out, the driver was an independent and not affiliated with Mister Softee. My apologies.
James Conway, President of Mister Softee writes:
Sean… your report of the fight involving the haagen-dazs vendor is incorrect. The truck / driver involved is a red & white independent truck – not Mister Softee. Go to http://www.midtownlunch.com for a picture taken at the scene.
My apologies for repeating the error… I’ve corrected the post below.
