NY Bagel Café in Alexandria, VA is the latest casualty in the ongoing cycle of franchise sales and franchise closings produced by an illicit fee collection scheme. 40 NY Bagel Café locations have closed or debranded; only 6 remain open.
(NY Bagel Scam) Franchisee Walid Katemtou opened the NY Bagel Café in the Wegman’s Hilltop Center in Alexandria, VA in January, 2016.
He built out a beautiful store in a brand new strip center.
He and his wife got high marks and praise from loyal customers for their warm, personal and attentive service.
Despite the fact that he was sold an illegal franchise that was not legally registered to be offered in VA, Walid through himself into the business with a positive and determined attitude.
March 17, 2017 his Alexandria, VA NY Bagel Café closed its doors, just like nearly 40 others have closed or debranded in recent years.
Just six remain open, casting serious doubt on the viability of the concept.

The sad fact is… the Alexandria, VA NY Bagel had a great operator, wonderful service, a beautiful interior and a prime location.
And still it wasn’t sustainable.
We are sad for Walid Katemtou and wish him the best in all future endeavors!
